Annual Cork Schools Shakespearean awards run in ether April or March each year

The awards are hosted and sponsored by the Cork Arts Theatre, where youth get the opportunity to work and use a real theatre. It is the only event of its kind which recognises and encourages young people in the theatre and allows them to use the technical equipment while providing technical support. The competition is open to Cork Secondary Schools.

The maximum number of entries is limited to 18 and schedule slots are on a first come first served basis.

To date over 800 new plays have been submitted and judged, over 150 have been performed and 6 have been published. Six production companies will perform the plays over the period of 5 nights each play getting a min of two airings. Full technical support will be provided by our staff, we will engage production companies and directors to work with writers on scripts for staging.

Up to the 28th of April playwrights can submit plays to our one-act plays annual contest.

Full technical support will be provided by our staff and we will engage production companies and directors to work with writers on scripts for staging.

We have two different categories both established writers (category A) and new writers (category B). Both winners of category A and category B will receive a trophy, and have their play published.

Six production companies will perform the plays over the period of one week nights each play getting a min of two airings.

All writers will be invited to Writers Day, when they will receive a full adjudication of their work, and, short-listed plays will be announced. This will take place in August with production in Early December.

ONE-ACT & FULL-LENGTH PIECES WANTED

The Cork Arts Theatre believes very strongly in supporting both new and advanced playwrights and reserves a large portion of its season each year for the presentation of original works. We are now accepting submissions in the following categories

FULL-LENGTH PLAYS:

We are ALWAYS on the lookout for new full-length plays (41 to 80 pages only) for addition to our regular season. These may be sent year-round, and should include the critique fee €50 an SAE ( envelope for reply and evaluation only -- scripts are no longer returned) and a brief cover letter telling us a bit about the play and yourself. Your play will be read and carefully evaluated and you will receive at least one critique from qualified readers. If selected, your play will generally receive at least ten performances.

ONE-ACT PLAYS:


We are also always very interested in shorter plays (16 to 40 pages) that might be combined into engaging evenings of theater or performed for special events. as in our one Act drama week. These may also be sent by April and should include the critique fee (€25), an SAE for reply and evaluation only -- scripts are not returned) and a brief cover letter telling us a bit about the play and yourself. Full rules can be down loaded from this page.Your play will be read and carefully evaluated and you will receive at least one critique from qualified readers. If selected, your play will generally receive at least two performances.

 Please Follow The Guidelines Below When Submitting Any Plays To Cork Arts Theatre. NOTE: We DO NOT Accept Email Submissions At This Time; You Now Need Only Submit Four Copies of Your Play; and NO Scripts Will NOT Be Returned
Writing Guidelines :

Standard Typed Play Script Format Or Any Similar Approach Is Fine Include The Proper Critique Fee For Your Play(s) The critique fees for submitted plays are as follows:
  1. €25 for each one-act play (16 to 39 pages )
  2. €50 for each full-length play (40 to 90 pages)
  3. If the proper fee is not included, the script(s) will be recycled.
  4. Include A Brief Cover Letter Telling A Bit About The Play & Yourself
  5. Please Bind Or Staple Your Script(s) Securely Don't Forget To Put Your Name & Contact Info On The Cover Page of your Play

The Scripts our read blind (our Critiques will not be aware of writer)

You would be surprised how many writers forget this.

Submit As Many Plays As You Wish
  1. Just make sure to include the appropriate fee for each, and standard stamped envelopes for replies and evaluations
  2. Meet The Annual Deadline
  3. We accept all scripts year-round, but if you wish your One Act(s) to be considered It must be submitted before End of April. Full Lengths, End of November.

Please Be Patient
Selecting plays can take several months or longer, depending on the time of year, the theater's workload and the number of scripts received.
